The Birthplace of Chicken Nanban – A Dish with History

It is said that chicken nanban first appeared on the menu at Ogura before 1964. The impetus for the development of Chicken Nanban was “mottainai” (what a waste).
At that time, whole chickens were purchased, and while the thigh meat was used in products such as chicken katsu (chicken cutlets), the meat from the breast was not used very often.
The owner, who knew the poverty of the postwar period, was wondering if there was a way to make the unprofitable meat tasty, and the idea came from children who dipped fried horse mackerel in sweet vinegar and ate it.
The owner did not patent the recipe because he felt that it was a delicacy that everyone could enjoy and should not be kept to himself. Thanks in part to this, chicken nanban has become such a beloved dish that it is now considered a local delicacy of Miyazaki Prefecture!
