Immerse in a World of Pottery

Nestled in the serene hills of Nagasaki Prefecture, Hasami Town has been a cornerstone of Japan’s ceramic heritage for over 400 years. Each spring, this quaint town comes alive with the Hasami Pottery Festival, a vibrant celebration of its rich pottery tradition. From April 29 to May 5, 2025, visitors can immerse themselves in a world where history, art, and community converge.
A Legacy of Craftsmanship

Hasami pottery, the town’s signature porcelain, traces its origins back to 1599 when Korean potters introduced porcelain-making techniques to the region. Unlike the ornate Imari ware, Hasami-yaki was designed for everyday use, characterized by its durability and simple elegance. Over the centuries, it became a staple in Japanese households, blending functionality with aesthetic appeal.
It now holds approximately 16% share of the daily tableware market and is the largest ceramic production area in Nagasaki Prefecture, and the third largest producer of daily Japanese tableware in Japan in terms of shipments.
Historical Pottery Festival

Hasami Pottery Festival was first held in 1959 and has continued for 66 years until this year. This festival features over 150 kilns and pottery vendors, offering a vast array of ceramics—from traditional designs to contemporary pieces—often at discounted prices. Visitors can also participate in hands-on workshops, including pottery wheel experiences and painting sessions, making it an interactive event for all ages.

There will also be a number of food trucks, so visitors can enjoy not only authentic pottery, but also the flavors of Nagasaki.
