A Sweet Fusion of Tradition and Innovation

Nestled within the bustling Hakata Marui shopping complex, just a short stroll from Hakata Station, “Imonne Hakata” has quickly become a must-visit destination for dessert enthusiasts. This charming shop introduces a unique confectionery experience by blending the creamy richness of gelato with the chewy texture of traditional Japanese mochi. Since its grand opening on March 28, 2025, Imonne Hakata has been captivating both locals and tourists alike with its innovative treats.
The Story Behind Imonne

“Imonne” was born in Ise City, Mie Prefecture, and was named after the owner’s own experience growing up as the daughter of a dried sweet potato farmer, which in the local dialect means “sweet potato girl”. Drawing inspiration from her roots, she embarked on a mission to create desserts that honor traditional Japanese flavors while embracing modern twists. The result is a delightful array of mochi-wrapped gelato confections that pay homage to her heritage and love for innovation.
Indulge in the Signature “Gela Mochi”

At the heart of Imonne’s offerings is the “Gela Mochi”—a harmonious blend of velvety gelato encased in soft, freshly made mochi. Customers can choose from a variety of flavors, including classic options like matcha and strawberry, as well as seasonal specialties such as sakura (cherry blossom) and sweet potato. Each Jela Mochi is meticulously handcrafted on-site, ensuring a fresh and delightful experience with every bite.
Popular Flavors:
- Matcha Green Tea: A rich and earthy flavor that perfectly complements the sweetness of the mochi.
- Strawberry: A refreshing and fruity option, ideal for those seeking a lighter treat.
- Sakura (Cherry Blossom): A seasonal favorite that offers a delicate floral note, celebrating the essence of spring in Japan.
- Sweet Potato: A nod to the founder’s nickname, this flavor provides a creamy and comforting taste reminiscent of home-cooked desserts.
A Visual and Culinary Experience

Beyond the delectable flavors, Imonne Hakata offers a feast for the eyes. The open kitchen concept allows visitors to witness the meticulous process of crafting each Jela Mochi, from the stretching of the mochi to the careful wrapping of the gelato. This interactive experience not only showcases the artisans’ skills but also adds an element of anticipation and excitement to the visit.
The shop’s minimalist and elegant interior design, featuring natural wood accents and soft lighting, creates a serene ambiance that invites guests to savor their treats in a tranquil setting. While seating is limited, the nearby Hakata Station area offers ample spots to enjoy your dessert while soaking in the vibrant city atmosphere.
Embrace the Sweetness of Japanese Culture

Imonne Hakata offers more than just a dessert; it provides a cultural experience that encapsulates the essence of Japanese innovation and tradition. Whether you’re a seasoned traveler or a first-time visitor to Fukuoka, indulging in a Jela Mochi is a delightful way to immerse yourself in the local flavors and craftsmanship.
Personal Notes
- Recommend👍: II tried the matcha and the dried sweet potato and would recommend the dried sweet potato flavor more. The dried sweet potato flavor ice cream also contains solid dried sweet potato, which makes the texture more enjoyable. The matcha is also very tasty with its strong matcha-flavored ice cream, but the dried sweet potato is more of a surprise.
