Candied Sweet Potato Stick “Imokenpi”

Nestled beneath the bustling streets of Fukuoka lies a hidden gem for sweet potato enthusiasts: Imoya Kinjiro Tenjin Store. This charming shop offers a delightful array of Imokenpi (sweet potato snack)—crispy, candied sweet potato sticks that have been a beloved Japanese snack for generations. Whether you’re a seasoned traveler or a curious foodie, Imoya Kinjiro promises an authentic taste of Japan’s rich culinary heritage.

The Rich History of ImoKenpi

Imokenpi traces its origins back to the Edo period in Japan. Originally crafted in the Tosa region (modern-day Kochi Prefecture), these sweet treats were made by slicing sweet potatoes into thin sticks, deep-frying them, and coating them with sugar syrup. Over time, Imokenpi became a staple snack, cherished for its delightful crunch and natural sweetness.

Imoya Kinjiro: A Legacy of Flavor

Founded in Kochi Prefecture, Imoya Kinjiro has been producing premium Imokenpi for decades. The brand is renowned for its commitment to quality, using carefully selected sweet potatoes and traditional methods to create snacks that are both nostalgic and innovative. Their dedication to excellence has earned them a loyal following across Japan.

Freshly Fried Imokenpi

Imoya Kinjiro’s Imokenpi are made from Japanese sweet potatoes purchased from contract farmers in Southern Kyushu. Especially, quality varieties such as “Kogane Sengan” from the Osumi Peninsula are selected. Since it is made without any additives, using only sweet potatoes, sugar, and oil, the original flavor of the ingredients can be enjoyed.

“Freshly fried Imokenpi” is available only at directly managed stores with a deep-frying workshop.
Since only the deep-fried products are sold that day, they are sold only at directly-managed stores, so please enjoy the special texture and flavor.

Personal Notes

  • Freshly Fried Imokenpi: It is true that the aroma is different from other taro kenpis, but the taro kenpis usually sold are tasty enough.
  • Access: It is quite a walk from Tenjin Station, so if you get off at Tenjin-Minami Station, it is recommended to stop by as it is close. (Near exit “west 12a”)
