The name “Ōhori” translates to “large moat,” a nod to its origins as part of the defensive moat system for Fukuoka Castle, constructed in 17th century by Lord Kuroda Nagamasa. The park, as we know it today, was established in 1929, inspired by China’s West Lake, and has since become a cherished landmark in Fukuoka.
